Dr Stephen Hicks is a British-Australian neuroscientist and entrepreneur. He has held senior investigator positions at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London where he led teams investigating cybernetics, visual perception, sense-of-self, digital therapeutics and applications of augmented reality and spatial computing.
Dr Hicks is an opinion leader in the fields of brain-machine interfaces and the future of human augmentation, and has been featured on BBC, CNN and WIRED. He is an invited TED speaker, and his work in the fields of computer vision and AI is highly cited. He has co-founded two deep-tech companies which develop augmented reality systems for the partially sighted (OXSIGHT), and advanced emotive avatars for metaverse applications (MIIJI).
Stephen’s research in augmented vision has been recognised with multiple awards including the prestigious Royal Society Award for Innovation and the Google Global Impact Award. He was shortlisted for the 2022 Global Advance Australia Award which recognises extraordinary Australians who are leading their fields abroad.
In his spare time he writes science fiction about the future of humanity.
